A map that doesn’t wait behind a cookie box
Many EU websites hide their Google map behind a “Load map” button until the visitor agrees. A DoMaps map sets no cookies. Here is what that changes, and what it doesn’t.
What sites do today
The usual fix is a placeholder. The map stays hidden until the visitor clicks a button. A visitor who doesn’t click sees no map.
What a DoMaps map does
- It sets no cookies and uses no local storage in the visitor’s browser.
- It shows no ads and builds no visitor profiles.
- DoMaps keeps a count of views per map, per day and per month, and the names of the websites a map appears on. It doesn’t store visitor IP addresses with those counts.
- It takes its colors from your website, so it looks like part of the page.
What it connects to
Like any embedded content, the map loads files from servers. Each of them sees the visitor’s IP address, because that is how a browser fetches anything. When a DoMaps map loads, the visitor’s browser connects to:
| Server | What it sends |
|---|---|
| map.domaps.app | The map page inside the iframe, and its pin icon. |
| api.domaps.app | The map’s settings, and the view count. |
| tiles.openfreemap.org | Map tiles and label fonts, from OpenFreeMap. |
| tiles.mapterhorn.com | Elevation tiles for hills and terrain, from Mapterhorn (open terrain data, served by Cloudflare). |
A line for your privacy policy, if you list embedded services
Our map is provided by DoMaps (domaps.app). When you view it, your browser connects to DoMaps and its map providers, which receive your IP address to deliver the map. The map sets no cookies. See https://domaps.app/privacy. Switching from a Google embed
Setup is the same as a Google embed: one iframe, no account, no API key. It takes under 3 minutes. You also choose the colors, the pins and the starting view, and a saved map can be changed later from your dashboard.
- Make your map: paste your website’s address and your own address.
- Replace the Google iframe on your page with the DoMaps code. The guides show where it goes in each site builder.
- If nothing else on your site loads Google Maps, you can remove the Google Maps entry from your consent tool.
A DoMaps map is made for showing where you are. If you need Street View, routing or place search on the map, Google Maps does more. See the full comparison.
Questions
Does a DoMaps map set cookies?
No. The map sets no cookies and uses no local storage in the visitor’s browser.
Do I still need a cookie banner?
The map gives you no cookie to ask about. Your site may still need a banner for other things, such as analytics, ads or other embeds. That depends on your whole site.
Does the visitor’s IP address go anywhere?
Yes, to the servers the map loads from: DoMaps, OpenFreeMap, and Mapterhorn for terrain. Every server a browser connects to sees its IP address. DoMaps doesn’t store visitor IP addresses with the view counts.
What happens when a visitor clicks “Get directions”?
The link opens Apple Maps on Apple devices and Google Maps elsewhere. Nothing goes to Google until the visitor clicks it.
