When to pick Google Maps instead
- You want Street View, directions with travel times, or a search of the area inside the map. The Embed API has a mode for each.5
- You need Google’s place data: over 250 million places, with photos and reviews.8
- You are building an app with routing, place search or Street View across more than 250 countries and territories.8
When DoMaps fits better
- You want the map in your site’s colors without designing a map style.
- You want to change the map later from your dashboard. A saved map updates on your site on the next page view.
- You’d rather not set up a Cloud project, billing and an API key.

Questions
Is the Google Maps embed free?
Google says the Maps Embed API is free with unlimited requests. It needs an API key and a Cloud project with a billing account. The sources are listed on this page.
Can a Google map match my brand colors?
With the Maps JavaScript API and a map ID you can design a custom style. The Embed API has no style option. DoMaps styles the map from your site’s colors with no style editor.
Does DoMaps use Google data?
No. The map data comes from OpenStreetMap and the tiles from OpenFreeMap. The “Get directions” link opens Google Maps on non-Apple devices, only when a visitor clicks it.
